Well, he has kept us delighted, educated, and genuinely impressed with regular broadcasts and commentaries from down south. Way down south! Here is a little sampling of Greg’s/Fred’s ongoing adventures since earlier this year. For those not in the Freezin’ Freddie chat group, please enjoy Fred’s Fast Films: little snippets of life on Macquarie Island from the perspective of a (very excitable!) local. n.b. Typos and bad grammar have been (auto) corrected! ?

July 4. Some history from 75 years ago today…

Janatha: Wow, Freddie, “jet-assisted take-off rockets”- impressive! Would have been state of the art back then. Very interesting. Thank you. Is that from the archives department, Freddie?
Freddie: There are lots of history books here on the Island. Crykies, there are some stories I could tell, from shipwrecks, to untold, possible murders on island. Isolated and dangerous place to be.??
Janatha: Interesting question from Mum – was Charles Scoble buried on the island or shipped home??
P.S. Just found an excerpt on Trove regarding this and it states Mr Scoble was from Castlemaine!!
Freddie: He went ice skating on one of the lakes he fell through the lake and drowned. He’s at the bottom of the lake still. It is on the north end of Macquarie Island and you walk past that lake to go to one of the huts.

July 28. “Boo!
Everyone’s nose is like that ? – strong wind, sea breeze, and salt.
What a cracker.??
August 10. 1st leopard seal arrives. Scary animal. Now I can add laying conduit to my resume. Woo hoo.
Hope all are well. Sunrise is up earlier thankfully. Records so far here, wettest day and wettest month for records taken. So much for showers of misty rain. 1st day cancelled machinery work as too wet.
Well, back to work – the refurbishment of the accommodation building. xxx

This week at Macquarie Island: 25 August 2023antarctica.gov.au
I submitted (this article – see link) for the news, Blizline. The AAD encourages expeditioners to submit a story/experience on how they are contributing to their time on station. ??

Hi there Cat. Yes, in regard to the article I wrote, you’re correct on the spelling and I’m sure to that extent, the grammar as well. A good pickup by you. I should have known better to submit the article without it being proofread. I will definitely do it next time. Maybe you could assist me if you have the time, otherwise I will chat with one of the girls.
?Yes, all windows are double glazed on station, though not working as well as time has deteriorated the vacuum in some. The heating is water going through oil-type wall-mounted heaters. Like the ones you may have had at school. No fans, so they can take quite a while to heat up.
I use hot water bottles in my bed and as I speak, I have a 20 ltr plastic drum with lid filled with hot water to keep my feet warm till I go to bed.
Well, there you go, Cat. Much love xxx??
